ARIANA GRANDE'S hate that i made you love me | LADY TULIP

There is something beautifully conflicted about hate that i made you love me.

On first listen, it sounds like a breakup song wrapped in regret. But the more I sat with it, the more it felt like Ari was speaking to something much larger than a former lover. Fame. Expectations. Versions of herself that other people created. The song carries the ache of someone who knows that being loved is not always the same as being understood.

Vocally, she sounds restrained in the best possible way. Gone are the moments designed to impress. Instead, every note feels intentional, almost conversational, allowing the emotion to do the heavy lifting. The production leaves plenty of room for the lyrics to breathe, creating a sense of intimacy that feels surprisingly brave for an artist of her scale. Even so, the adlibs that echoed towards the end of the song reminded us exactly who she is.

Of course, all good things take time to develop, and artistic growth rarely happens overnight. What strikes me is that Ari has always seemed like a good teacher through her music, translating her experiences into lessons that reveal themselves if one is willing to sit with the key messaging. If she had been able to fully control her sound and storytelling from the very beginning, I can only imagine how much further she might have molded and guided her fanbase through those perspectives. Even now, there is a sense that she is inviting listeners not just to hear her story, but to learn something from it alongside her.

And then there is the music video.

As a cinema fan, this is where the era truly clicked for me.

Possible track name?

Directed by Christian Breslauer, the video plays like a darkly comic psychological thriller, casting Justin Long as a man desperately trying to bury the memory of Ari, only to find that she continues to haunt him in increasingly surreal ways. Graveyards, ghostly apparitions, near-death experiences, fire, obsession. The imagery feels lifted from a forgotten cult horror film rather than a traditional pop music video. A nice way to follow up the Brighter Days Ahead cinematic universe and creating new memento.

Supernatural is one of my favorite tracks from ES. The light above her head is such a warm reference.

What I loved most is that the video never feels interested in realism. It leans fully into metaphor. Ari appears less as a person and more as an idea, one that refuses to stay buried. The result is playful, unsettling, and unexpectedly funny, with the kind of visual storytelling that rewards a second watch.

Wonder if the yellow dress alludes to a movie/TV reference or to the 'Yellow Dress' theory? & possible track titles?

A wonderful reference to Regina King's character Rhonda from a Cinderella Story. A fierce protector.

This may be one of the most intriguing and stronger openings to an Ariana Grande era yet.

For me, the strongest part isn't the hook or even the visuals It's the feeling that Ari has stopped trying to explain herself. She's simply telling the story and letting us sit with the discomfort of it. That makes hate that i made you love me feel less like a comeback single and more like the opening scene of a very interesting movie.

Here are some of my favorite lyrics from the song:

"Eyes lit like the sky
Turned tears into diamonds, got good at goodbyes

Just know that I will find my way from you
Like flowers from a tomb while you decide who you are

Yeah, I, I, I hate that I made you love me
Sorry if I made me your type
Yeah, I, I hate that I made you love me
Cause I barely tried, yeah, I, I, I

What's happening now?
You studied my crown and borrowed my body"

And if you found yourself wishing for bigger vocals, brighter pop production, or a more straightforward music video, then Cinderella, the shoe described in hate that i made you love me fits…doesn’t it?

This era isn't trying to be universally loved. It's delightfully specific. The kind of art that knows exactly who it's speaking to and is perfectly comfortable if everyone else leaves before the credits roll.

Now, I shall continue listening to HTIMYLM on repeat until the album release. Thank you for stopping by.
