This recent round of updates at home wasn’t about a full transformation. It was about meticulous improvements; a couple of small structural changes that made the space feel a bit more organized and easier to live in.
One of the first things I focused on was the walls. They felt plain, and in some areas, they showed wear from daily use. Instead of repainting, I decided to install wall panels. Wall panels turned out to be one of the most satisfying decisions in the renovation. They added depth and texture instantly, without needing complicated construction. In certain areas, they also helped conceal minor construction imperfections. Unfortunately, although new, the building and apartment has many unfinished construction elements. To address such issues, I chose designs that were clean, structured rather than decorative and easy to install. The goal wasn’t to make the room look fancy; it was mostly to give it a finished feel.
The panels created a subtle backdrop that made everything else in the room look more put together. Most importantly, they are easier to maintain. A quick wipe is enough, which is a small win in a busy household.
Initially, I had planned to move forward with a navy-blue palette that would complement the gray-toned furniture we had carefully put together over the past year. It felt like a natural continuation of the direction we had already taken with the space.
However, every blue panel I considered was consistently out of stock. After reviewing our finances and realizing that the budget was finally aligned with our plans, waiting indefinitely didn’t feel like the most sensible option. Rather than delaying the entire project for the sake of one design choice, I made the decision to adjust the plan altogether and work with what was available at the time.
Alongside this primary wall panel, I opted for:
- Plain (without texture) cool brown toned wall panels (from Dreamteriors) for MVR 500 each.
- 1 Glossy black and gold marble sheet as a TV backdrop (from Dreamteriors) for MVR 1,800.
- Marble textured lightweight gray sheets (from Asters) for MVR 749 each.
For my bedroom:
- We installed built-in closed shelf cabinets and extended the primary wall panels across their surface so the storage would blend seamlessly into the overall wall design. The result is a clean, uninterrupted look where functionality does not compete with aesthetics. These closed cabinets help keep everyday items neatly out of sight, which immediately makes the space feel more settled. The units were also designed vertically, making full use of the wall height and allowing the room to store more without feeling crowded.
- My bedroom has a beautiful focal window wall for curtains. As of now, there are not many residential buildings nearby and the window offers a generous view of the surrounding streets and open sky. To make this space extremely functional, we built a horizontal storage unit that also serves as a cozy reading nook bench. This has become my favorite spot in my bedroom.
- Additionally, we utilized space from a wall that is often left out in terms of functionality by creating a small joint cabinet space for our aquarium. This cabinet has sufficient support to hold a 50-gallon tank and the cabinet neatly concealed below, comfortably accommodates a medium size filter and other aquarium necessities and fish food out of sight. The vertical joint storage next to the aquarium cabinet stores our ironing/steaming appliances and additional pillows and beddings.
- Our TV wall is basically the accent wall or the design focal wall in the bedroom. With a floating shelf unit for PlayStation and other déco, the TV wall also functions as the study/snack area of the room. A long desk is situated beneath the TV providing ample space for a workstation, additional storage and a small minibar for beverages.
I added:
- Soft ambient lighting for general use. These are now the only acceptable lights. Overhead lights are not appreciated. Haha.
- Task lighting behind the TV in my bedroom and underneath kitchen cabinet shelf.
- An obnoxiously cute Chandelier (from Reflect light shop).
- Decorative fixtures that add personality to our living room.
- Warm-toned bulbs to create a comfortable atmosphere.

It is also worth recognizing that much of this work took place during the month of Ramadan. Despite the demands of the season, the team showed up each day with focus and dedication. That kind of diligence does not go unnoticed.
Also, a very special note of appreciation goes to Anil, whose craftsmanship became the backbone of this entire project. He patiently accommodated every adjustment and every unexpected request we brought to the table, often finding practical solutions where we could only see ideas. It was clear, even from a distance, how much thought, precision, and pride he poured into each piece of work.
What made his contribution even more remarkable was his commitment during a difficult moment. Despite sustaining an injury to his hand along the way, he remained determined to see the project through and worked diligently to prevent any delays. That level of dedication is not something one easily forgets.
I am deeply grateful for the team's skills, perseverance, and the steady effort they invested in bringing this space to life.
This renovation didn’t turn my home into a showroom, and that was never my intention. It made the space more functional, more organized, and more closely aligned with how I actually live each day.
Over the past ten years, I have worked steadily to build my life. Making adjustments where needed, improving what I could, and learning along the way. In many ways, this renovation feels like a continuation of that same process: small updates, thoughtful decisions, and patience over time.
Being in a position to make choices that slowly come together into something meaningful is not something I take lightly. It is a privilege...one that, at some point of my life, felt distant or uncertain to me.
Alhamdulillah for progress that happens gradually, and for the ability to keep moving forward.
Thank you for stopping by. Until next time...
